Singer/songwriter Victoria Edwards will entertain Inverell next Saturday night, August 9.

SINGING a message of hope, vocalist and songwriter Victoria Edwards volunteered to be the ambassador for the 2014 Hike for Homeless initiative which comes to Inverell next week.

Victoria has lent her talent to perform for audiences along the seven-day hike in Moree, Narrabri, Gunnedah, Tam-worth, Armidale, Glen Innes, and finishing up in Inverell, to bind people though the common language of music.

Her involvement began when she was approached by the event organiser, Leigh Smith, manager of Byamee Homelessness Support Team in Moree. He was hoping to use a certain song as the project anthem.

“Leigh had actually heard my first single from my album, Authentic.

“The single’s called Open Doors, and I think it just struck a chord with him that we all go through different things in our life, and sometimes it’s our attitude that gets us through.”

Open Doors has its roots in a period of her life when Victoria moved from Moree to Toowoo-mba, she was working and things were looking up, with a trip booked to Nashville to do some song writing.

When she lost her job the week before her US flight, Victoria was faced with some hard decisions but took a leap of faith.

“Do I cash in the ticket, do I stay or do I do it?

“And I really thought about it and I thought, ‘You know what? I’m just going to do it’.”

She was working with a couple of other songwriters in Nashville, and shared the story of her dilemma. She finished by saying, “But it doesn’t matter, because when one door closes, another one opens”.

It was then, her song was born.

When Leigh rang her about the use of her song Open Doors for the campaign, Victoria said she was intrigued and asked to learn more about the hike.

“I don’t like to see anybody cold and homeless on the streets so he told me more about the project,” she said.

As she listened, she agreed without reservation for the event to use her song, but offered a suggestion.

“What if I come on board as the ambassador and I’ll give you the use of the song and we’ll work together, letting people know about it?”

As a result, Victoria will be travelling with some accomp-lished musicians to offer her originals, a handful of covers and a performance at each venue of the Hike’s anthem, Open Doors.

The concept of Hike for Homeless is to heighten awareness about the depth of homelessness in the region, and Victoria acknowledged that solving the issue isn’t just in the hands of those without.

“With Hike for Homeless, it’s encouraging people to open the doors, to not turn a blind eye and walk away from somebody that needs that support.”

Familiar with the region after living in Moree, Victoria said she was thrilled to have the chance to perform here again.

“I’m looking forward to getting back down to Inverell and (the) northwest slopes and plains, ‘cause you guys love music down there, and you’ve always been kind to me with the music that I play, so I can’t wait to get back,” she said warmly.

Victoria will be performing as the headline act in Inverell on Saturday, August 9 at Flanders House.

The show opens at 6.30pm with local bands coming on board as well to show off Inverell’s talent. The concert is drug and alcohol free, no passouts and children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are only $2 and available at Jobs Australia, the Linking Together Centre or at the door on the night.
